Building the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies & Research Center with Mapei

The King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSRC) is a non-profit organization based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, committed to investigating economics and technology across various energy platforms. The modular structure, designed by Zaha Hadid architects, is a living, organic plan in which building expansions are permitted to expand and multiply like cells without compromising the project's visual integrity. Composed of a network of three-dimensional six-sided cells, the project is based on the concept of connectivity. The center emerges above the arid terrain as a cluster of crystalline formations that change in reaction to the environment. The design's spatial programme guarantees that each component is appropriate for the role it fulfils. The exterior's shell-like facades hide the porous interior, which has covered courtyards that let natural light in.

Usage of Mapei’s Services

• MAPEGROUT THIXOTROPIC was used to smooth out surface imperfections and repair heavily abraded surfaces.

• MAPELASTICAQUADEFENSE  ready-to-use, ultra quick-drying, flexible liquid membrane was used to waterproof internal and external surfaces.

• For the cementitious waterproofing system and liquid sheath, MAPEBAND Alkali-resistant rubber tape with feel was applied.
