Application	Meliá undergoes renovation: Madrid's iconic skyscraper consolidates its façade with Mapei The Hotel Meliá Madrid Princesa, considered a benchmark of modern architecture in Madrid and designed by the prestigious architect Antonio Lamela in 1965, is undergoing a comprehensive renovation of its exterior. Originally built with a façade composed of brick supports and natural stone cladding, the project contemplates its transformation into a high-performance ventilated façade. The main objective of this intervention is to improve the building's energy efficiency, adapting it to current standards of sustainability, thermal comfort and emissions reduction, without compromising its heritage value or architectural identity. The complexity of the project lay in the need to install the structure of the new ventilated façade on top of the historic stone cladding without dismantling it. To resolve this situation, Mapei's Mapewrap G Fiocco system was chosen, consisting of unidirectional fibreglass cords impregnated with Mapewrap epoxy resin, in order to achieve the desired structural behaviour. These elements were inserted into the previously drilled cavities and fixed using Mapefix VE SF chemical anchors, ensuring the consolidation of the wall without altering its original configuration or compromising its architectural integrity. This process was completed by applying reinforced plaster using Planitop HDM Maxi mortar, strengthened with alkali-resistant Mapegrid G 120 fibreglass mesh. This technical solution not only improves the mechanical strength of the assembly, but also prevents the appearance of cracks, providing a homogeneous, stable and resistant surface for the installation of the ventilated façade system. The result is an intervention that respects the heritage value of the building and meets current requirements for energy efficiency, durability and structural safety. Installation process summary: - Preparation of the Mapewrap G Fiocco system anchors with Mapewrap. - Drilling of the substrate to insert and chemically fix the anchors. - Fixing of the anchor to the substrate with Mapefix VE SF. - Surface cleaning. - Application of structural plaster using Planitop HD Maxi reinforced with Mapegrid G120 mesh. - Substrate prepared, reinforced and consolidated to receive the ventilated façade structure.
