Demande Te Ara Tukutuku mahi
Auckland City Councils Eke Panuku division have been testing and trialling the publics utilisation of the previous America’s Cup bases since 2021 to see how people engaged with the spaces. The existing asphalt basketball courts were hugely popular, so the decision was made to refurbish the existing asphalt to improve the surface whilst also taking the opportunity to give them a new look aligned to Te Ara Tukutuku mahi (the binding of the land and the sea). Eke Panuku Development state “Te Ara Tukutuku is about opening up these spaces to the public; continuing the journey of regenerating Wynyard Quarter to be a living green space, a vibrant community and destination where everyone feels welcome”. In the words of MBP Mapei’s National Product Manager, Scott Lacey: “the Mapecoat TNS Extreme was selected as the ideal solution for this multi-sport area due to having excellent physical and mechanical properties, allowing it to protect high-traffic surfaces used by players, cycles, skateboards, scooters and vehicles alike, whilst also providing the perfect non slip surface for sports and play.” “The TNS Extreme has excellent UV resistance and can be created in any colour or design, as demonstrated by the bright contrasting colours of the wonderful Te Ara Tukutuku mahi design”. Installed by Parklife, the surface was carefully selected for its proven durability and sustainable considerations aligned to Te Ara Tukutuku project values – it meets LEED air quality control standards, which is accepted in New Zealand for Greenstar projects and delivers to the Te Ara Tukutuku sustainable values. The TNS Extreme has been used for many Auckland Council Eke Panuku projects and has stood the test of time in the harshest of environments. Priority Location Director for the Waterfront, Fiona Knox says: “With our testing and trialling approach in these spaces, the improved surface will not only make basketball here safer and more enjoyable to play and watch, but supports other sports too, including futsal and volleyball. We’re looking forward to seeing how people use this improved space and will continue to learn from their experiences to bring enhanced public space to Wynyard Quarter.” “The Te Ara Tukutuku project colours of green and blue make for a stunning aesthetic, which represent the binding of whenua (land) and moana (sea), central to the project vision. More than 150 whetu (stars) are also featured, including a reference to Pōhutukawa – the second star in the Matariki cluster representing our connection to the past and our duty of care for te taiao (the environment), a core commitment for the Te Ara Tukutuku project”. It is now game on in Wynyard Quarter as the ever-popular basketball courts on the America’s Cup Base Spaces have re-opened for play, sporting an improved surface and new design.
