Certified Mapei products for the shipbuilding industry

The Mapei Marine line fulfils the needs of every type of boat and ship: cargo ships, cruise liners, pleasure craft and yachts

January 30, 2020

Mapei’s excellence in the materials chemistry sector is also applied to the shipbuilding industry, in which Mapei has been operating for a number of years with an extensive range of solutions and proposals that can be used in the construction of any type of boat or ship: cargo ships, cruise liners, pleasure craft and yachts.

The proposals in the Mapei Marine line combine aesthetics and functionality and meet the demands of a market looking to adopt innovative, cutting-edge solutions.

Mapei products can be integrated to form complete solutions that guarantee certified quality, excellent performance characteristics, functionality, reliability, durability, ease of use and ease of application.

Mapei systems are used for applications in various areas of boats and ships (cabins, communal areas, open areas and even service areas) and for various types of use (from waterproofing products to grouts, decking materials and even cleaning products).

Over the course of 2019, Mapei took part in numerous trade fairs to present its solutions in numerous areas of application: Seatrade Cruise Global Expo, NorShipping, METStrade and Cruise Ship Interiors Expo Europe.

During these exhibitions, Mapei proposed solutions developed with a focus on sustainability and attention for mankind and the environment. Mapei Research & Development has formulated solutions using innovative raw materials with low emissions of VOC.

Thanks to their high level of durability, elements and components have a longer life cycle, resulting in a reduction of waste material and lower consumption of materials and energy for reconstruction work.

Mapei has developed and proposed the following in particular:

  • numerous cutting-edge solutions for internal and external decks characterised by their high flexibility and elasticity, resistance to chemicals and abrasion and their availability in an extensive array of colours to create different effects and patterns, as well as a teak version to simulate the natural finish of wood.
  • MAPEDECK TEAK DESIGN, a self-levelling coating to create flooring with a teak-effect finish. Available in five different shades.
  • MAPEDECK TEAK EVOLUTION, self-levelling, seamless resin coating to create flooring with an even more realistic wood-effect finish which reproduces the typical grain pattern of natural wood.
  • MAPEDECK MONO DESIGN, fine-textured, trowellable, polymeric smoothing and levelling compound to create decorative coatings on floors and walls.
  • MAPEDECK MIRUM, decorative polyurethane skimming compound with a highly decorative finish for coating interior and exterior floors, walls and ceilings on ships and yachts.
  • MAPEDECK TERRAZZO, seamless resin coating to create interior floors with a “Venetian Terrazzo” effect finish in combination with natural aggregates.
  • MAPEDECK ANTISKID F4, coloured acrylic resin-based coating in water dispersion with selected fillers to create external non-slip coatings on internal and external ship decks.
  • MAPEDECK STARLIGHT DESIGN, special seamless resin coating for floors and walls.
  • solutions to improve the level of acoustic comfort on cargo ships, cruise liners and offshore oil rigs where the level of noise generated by machinery constantly running and the crew working round-the-clock can be a source of disturbance. Mapei proposes solutions to combat noise from vibrations and impact noise (noise generated by footsteps).
  • MAPEFLOAT SYSTEM, floating systems that dampen structural vibration oscillations by being placed between the vibrating structure and the other rooms;

  • MAPEVISCO SYSTEM, viscoelastic systems that dampen mechanical vibrations and the noise they generate, they are used in technical areas of a ship or just in certain parts of such areas;

  • MAPEDECK I.S. (Impact Sound) SYSTEM, a range of systems to dampen impact noise and noise generated by footsteps;

  • MAPEDECK I.S. SYSTEM LITE, soundproofing systems to combat impact noise characterised by the use of a lightweight subfloor made from MAPEDECK ULTRASCREED.

This comprehensive range of products is a reflection of Mapei’s constant commitment into the research and development of cutting-edge solutions, confirmed also by the Company’s participation at the forthcoming specialist sector trade fairs in Europe and the United States to help consolidate its relationship with other actors and stakeholders from this sector.

Another important example of Mapei’s international know-how is that it has taken part in the most important projects all around the world and has collaborated with the most prestigious design studios.

One such example is Espen Oeino with whom Mapei collaborated on projects in Norway, such as the REV (Research Expedition Vessel) Ocean Project, a ship dedicated to the study of marine ecosystems, for which Mapei supplied the self-levelling resin coating systems MAPEDECK DESIGN and MAPEDECK SOFT DESIGN, which were used to coat the surface of the helicopter pad and one of the decks used for playing games and sports.

Mapei also works with larger vessels. These include Grandi Navi Veloci ferries and cargo ships, and Carnival and Costa, operators of cruise liners sailing across the most beautiful seas and around the most spectacular islands.

Recently, Mapei helped coat the decks of the Carnival Pride and the Carnival Legend. MAPEDECK TEAK DESIGN resin coating was used for these interventions for its resistance to aggressive atmospheric agents and sea spray.

For the Royal Caribbean on the other hand, owned by the shipping company Oasis of the Sea, Mapei proposed the decorative coating product MAPEDECK MONODESIGN for the walls in the music hall.

Other projects include the series of Charter Yachts Dalmatino, Corona and Casanova, for which Mapei supplied MAPEDECK TEAK DESIGN, an extremely durable and easy to maintain polyurethane-based system, over a sub-layer prepared and levelled off with MAPEDECK PRIMER 200 and MAPEDECK LITESCREED. The seams were sealed with MAPEDECK CAULKING and received a final finish of MAPEDECK WAX, which guarantees a surface finish with a particularly high visual impact.

Apart from the projects mentioned above, Mapei solutions have also been used for other vessels and craft, such as on offshore oil rigs and icebreaker ships.
