Certified Mapei product for energy saving

At Klimahouse Mapei is presenting their cutting-edge certified and sustainable solutions for more energy efficient buildings and improved living comfort

January 14, 2019

For this year’s edition of Klimahouse, the reference exhibition for sustainable building and energy efficiency to be held in Bolzano from the 23rd to the 26th of January 2019, Mapei will be proposing certified, cutting-edge solutions to help reduce energy consumption and improve the level of living comfort (Stand A05/20).

The solutions are the result of the work carried out by Mapei Research and the company’s consolidated experience in best practices in the construction sector on sites all around the world and are designed to respect the environment and comply with the most widely adopted international protocols for the design of energy efficient buildings with a low impact on the environment (LEED®, BREEAM, WELL), as well as with Italian norms such as the legally binding Italian CAM (Criteri Amientali Minimi - Minimum Environmental Criteria) applied to the building industry.

Also, to gain a better understanding of the sustainability characteristics of a product and the impact it has on the environment, since 2016 Mapei has been issuing EPD’s (Environmental Product Declarations), documents which declare the impact products have on the environment during their entire life cycle, which is measured using standardised LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methods.

Thermal insulation: MAPETHERM SYSTEM

The MAPETHERM system is Mapei’s answer to the problem of thermal dispersion of heat from buildings, in both winter and summer. Thanks to the various MAPETHERM solutions available, the ideal thermal insulation for new constructions and during renovation work on old buildings can be designed accordingly.

The MAPETHERM SYSTEM is an external thermal insulation system that has received European Technical Approval (ETA) and can be installed on new builds or retrofitted on old buildings to improve their energy efficiency. The strength of the System lies in the adhesive, the key component of the solution developed by Mapei Research, which effectively contrasts deformations generated by the different temperatures on the two faces of the insulating panels, enabling safe, innovative insulating systems to be installed.

MAPETHERM FLEX RP is an elastic, impact-resistant skimming compound used to create new external insulation systems of the latest design and to repair old external thermal insulation damaged by the rigours of time and bad weather. Available in particle size 1.5 mm, MAPETHERM FLEX RP has achieved excellent results during tests to measure its resistance to impact by hard bodies carried out by the ITC (Institute of Construction Technology), in compliance with ETAG 004, a particularly important result in the case of critical areas.

MAPETHERM AR1 LIGHT is a lightweight cementitious adhesive and mortar specially developed to be applied in thick layers and is recommended when reinforced skim coats are required on external thermal insulation systems and to repair damaged façades.

Strengthen and Insulate

Thanks to the Italian special tax incentives available to make buildings safer and more energy efficient (Sisma Bonus + Eco Bonus), it is possible to qualify for tax incentives of up to 85% when carrying out combined structural strengthening and energy upgrades.

Mapei’s experience in structural strengthening and reducing the risk of damage caused by seismic activity, along with their extensive knowledge of materials and technologies used for the external thermal insulation of buildings, has given life to integrated Mapei systems for the combined strengthening and insulation of buildings and, as a result, access to tax incentives.

Protect and Colour

Amongst the various solutions available to help protect buildings in the event of seismic activity, Mapei will be presenting certified protection against the collapse of floors and ceilings: the MAPEWRAP EQ SYSTEM. A sound, innovative anti-seismic “wallpaper” made up of two products to help distribute dynamic stresses more evenly: bi-directional, pre-primed glass fibre fabric MAPEWRAP EQ NET and one-component, water-based polyurethane MAPEWRAP EQ ADHESIVE.
The finishing cycle involves the use of special MAPETHERM FLEX RP elastic skimming paste and ELASTOCOLOR PAINT PLUS elastomeric hygienising paint.

Mapei BioBlock® technology against moisture and mould

The research and technology behind colours make Mapei wall finishes designed for internal and external use stand out from the crowd. The wall finishes have been formulated to protect surfaces against wear and aggressive atmospheric agents, guaranteeing a much longer service life for the products along with lower maintenance costs.

For internal surroundings, Mapei will be proposing the “PLUS” range of wall finishes containing BioBlock® technology to combat the proliferation of mould and fungi. The high level of protection they provide for surfaces, along with the beautifully attractive range of finishes it is possible to achieve, make the Plus range of finishes the ideal choice for decorating internal surroundings. Also showcased will be DURSILITE PLUS, a water-based wall paint made from acrylic resin in water dispersion, selected fillers and special additives that give the finish excellent resistance to mould, good covering properties, opacity and good white balance. What is more, this water-based paint has very low emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) to guarantee a high level of living comfort.

Another important family of products created for internal surroundings that require a higher level of hygiene is MAPECOAT ACT (Advanced Coating Technology), certified wall enamels designed to meet the requirements of high levels of hygiene and cleanliness in surroundings used for food and beverages and healthcare.
MAPECOAT ACT 021 is an enamel paint designed for internal surroundings in areas with food and drinks compliant with the HACCP protocol and UNI 11021 standards, which specify the requirements and relative test procedures for paints and varnishes for walls and ceilings in areas where food and drinks are processed and handled.
MAPECOAT ACT 196 is an enamel paint for internal areas and is perfect for healthcare settings, schools and recreational areas. It contrasts the deposit and proliferation of bacteria on surfaces, including those that need frequent cleaning and disinfecting in compliance with tests using cleaning agents and disinfectants. MAPECOAT ACT 196 complies with ISO 22196 standards.
Enamel paints from the MAPECOAT ACT family will be the subject of demonstrations carried out by Mapei Technical Services on the Mapei Stand to prove the high performance properties of the two products.
Both paints have very low emission of VOC and have no effect on the quality of indoor air.

For external surfaces Mapei will be proposing finishing systems that form a well-bonded, seamless coating on surfaces, protects them against wear and atmospheric agents and leaves them with a highly attractive finish.
Also showcased will be the range of mineral finishing products made from silica-based binders, which includes SILANCOLOR AC TONACHINO PLUS with excellent water repellence, good vapour breathability and, thanks to the inclusion of BioBlock® technology, effective protection against microorganisms.
Amongst the various film-forming finishes available made with a base of acrylic polymers, showcased at Klimahouse will be those with a quartz base that guarantee a high level of adhesion and filling properties. QUARZOLITE TONACHINO PLUS in particular is a hygienising coating with BioBlock® technology that contrasts the formation and proliferation of mould, mildew and fungi.
And, last but not least, will be the range of elastomeric acrylic resin-based products in water dispersion. ELASTOCOLOR TONACHINO PLUS is an elastomeric coating with permanent elasticity with the capacity to absorb light deformations in substrates and protect the surface of concrete and reinforced concrete. This product also contains BioBlock® technology against the growth of microorganisms, as well as water-repellent Drop Effect technology.

Mapei’s new approach to colour: MAPEI MASTER COLLECTION

The Mapei finishes for internal and external surfaces described above are available in more than 1,000 exclusive Mapei shades from the MAPEI MASTER COLLECTION, a range that stands out for its completeness and uniqueness.
Mapei Master Collection is the result of scientific analysis carried out by sophisticated software that has allowed researchers to analyse more than 10,000 shades, locate their position on the colour spectrum by “reading” their level of reflectance and, together with 3D comparison, identify the bands of colours to be implemented. The shades in the MASTER COLLECTION can all be created using the ColorMap® automatic colouring system by Mapei.

Long-lasting solutions: MAPESTONE and MAPESTONE JOINT

Amongst the various products for street furniture, Mapei will be proposing the MAPESTONE and MAPESTONE JOINT systems to create architectural stone paving, fully compliant with the prescriptions of the new UNI 11714-1:2018 standards “Stone floor, wall and ceiling coverings – Part 1: Instruction for the design, installation and maintenance”.

MAPESTONE is the strong, durable system of installation mortar + grout used to create architectural stone paving made from setts, pebbles, cobblestones, slabs, blocks or prefabricated pavers. Thanks to its special properties, not only is MAPESTONE SYSTEM resistant to mechanical loads and stresses, hot/cold temperature variations generated by freeze/thaw cycles and de-icing salts, it also guarantees the durability of paving and maintenance and repair costs are considerably lower.

For pervious and elastic paving Mapei will be proposing MAPESTONE JOINT, a one-component, solvent-free, non-flammable polyurethane binder with a characteristic odour. The product also takes extra care of the health of floor-layers and it is ideal for sealing grouts between setts, bricks and cobblestones installed on loose installation beds and paving made from slabs installed on solid foundation beds. Completing the range is MAPESTONE JOINT CLEANER, specific solvent-free cleaner and thinner.

Thanks to its high level of durability and resistance to mechanical and thermal stresses, freeze/thaw cycles, de-icing slats and sea salt, MAPESTONE paving has a longer service life and require less maintenance, a perfect way to express the concept of sustainability, even in the field of street furniture.
