The Enzo Sacchi Velodrome, a historic landmark of Italian cycling in Florence, has undergone a major renovation in 2024, restoring it to its former glory. Originally opened in 1893, the velodrome has been a central hub for athletes and cycling enthusiasts for generations. The recent renovation project introduced state-of-the-art technologies and the Mapecoat TNS Cycle Track system to meet modern standards for safety and performance.

The Enzo Sacchi Velodrome, located in the heart of Parco delle Cascine in Florence, is a place that embodies more than a century of the history of Italian sport. Inaugurated in 1893 and named after the famous Tuscany cyclist who won a gold medal at the 1952 Olympic Games, for generations the velodrome has been considered a point of reference for cycling, welcoming both keen cyclists and athletes of every level. Originally the velodrome had a clay track which was then transformed into a concrete track and, over the years, underwent maintenance work on several occasions.

Renovation work

In 2024, thanks to an ambitious renovation project, the velodrome returned to its original splendour, thanks also to the work carried out by Mapei which played a crucial role in the works. The renovation included use of the best technical solutions available to create a cycling track up to the requirements of modern sports, while complying with the rigorous standards of the Italian Cycling Federation and guaranteeing the safety of cyclists.

Technology at the service of performance

The renovation project required the use of cutting-edge technology to create a sport surface that would meet the needs of both the athletes and the organisers of top-flight cycling events.
Mapei suggested to use the Mapecoat TNS Cycle Track system, a multilayer acrylic  resin-based waterborne system designed for velodromes installations. Thanks to its high wear resistance, the system offers an excellent combination of sliding properties and stability for the athlete during the sport performance. The first step was to treat the concrete substrate with Mapecoat TNS Primer EPW, which guarantees a perfect adhesion for the next layer.
A levelling layer of Mapecoat TNS White Base Coat HV acrylic resin basecoat was then applied to improve the evenness. Mapecoat TNS Color fine-grained acrylic coloured coating was used to complete the striking look and functionality of the track. Then, Mapecoat TNS Base Color coating was applied, which not only provides resistance to wear, but also ensures slip resistance, essential for the safety of athletes during competitions.
The surface was finally protected by applying Mapecoat TNS Paint which guarantees longer life and optimum protection over time. The final step was to mark out the lines on the track with Mapecoat TNS Line, a product that guarantees precision and durability, even in the case of intense use of the tracks.
Thanks to this complete system, the Enzo Sacchi Velodrome now has a high-performance and safe cycling track, ready to take on the challenge of cycle races of the highest level.
Thanks to the use of Mapei solutions the structure was renovated in terms of performance, while at the same time preserving its traditions and its place in history. The velodrome has once again taken its place as a sporting and cultural attraction for Florence, providing residents and visitors with a meeting place that celebrates sport, the passion for cycling and the history of the city.
