An emergency service for treating injuries
At Mapei Sport athletes prepare for new challenges and find out about a new service
Mapei Sport Research Centre has introduced a new emergency medical service specifically designed for competitive athletes who suffer injuries during training or competitions. The initiative provides rapid diagnosis and rehabilitation planning, ensuring a safe return to sport. Alongside this, the Centre continues to offer its renowned fitness training and assessment services tailored to athletes of all levels.
A new medical service has been launched at Mapei Sport Research Centre to manage injuries and acute pathologies very promptly. It is a kind of medical emergency trauma service for competitive athletes who, following an injury during sport, require almost immediate intervention to assess the extent of the injury, make an accurate diagnosis and, if necessary, organise an appropriate rehabilitation plan for a safe and effective return to sport.
Mapei Sport Research Centre offers prompt trauma treatment for competitive athletes
“In our experience we have realised that many amateurs get injured at the weekend, especially on Sundays, when most matches and competitions take place, so we thought of making an arrangement with clubs so their members, if necessary, can come to us to be assessed very promptly on Monday,” so Dr Claudio Pecci explained, Chief Executive and Medical Director of Mapei Sport Research Centre in Olgiate Olona (Province of Varese, Italy).
The injured athlete will be examined by one of the sports medicine specialists and experts in the management of musculoskeletal injuries who will, if necessary, carry out a muscular ultrasound scan - for internal use - to determine the nature of the injury and make a prognosis. If necessary, further examinations will be carried out and a proper re-athletisation and rehabilitation program will be planned. The service will not be expensive, thanks to the subsidised rate for clubs that have signed the special agreement.

Summing up, the benefits of signing up (at no cost!) for this service for teams are:
- a prompt appointment with a highly qualified specialist to have a more precise diagnosis and a more effective rehabilitation plan;
- support for health professionals already working at the club;
- a subsidised special rate for the entire service.
Nevertheless, prevention takes priority over treatment. At this time of year lots of athletes of all levels and sports come to Mapei Sport Research Centre to takea pre-season assessment test and carry out their winter training at the Mapei Sport Training Department.
Mapei Sport has opened our doors to skiers, footballers, basketball players and motorcyclists and, over recent months, most notably to cycling teams for fitness training in the gym.
The staff of this elite centre set up in 1996 to support the Mapei Professional Cycling Team that so many professionals, including the Lidl-Trek men’s and women’s teams, now rely today, are keen to contribute to the development of young athletes, allowing them time to progress and meet their clubs’ needs.

“In view of the 2025 season, it is advisable to get plenty of data by making club members take assessment tests (VO2max or Mader evaluations) so training can be planned as effectively as possible, carefully working out the right training loads for each individual team member. Young cyclists that are growing are also advised to have a bike fitting session in the modern Movement Analysis Laboratory to find their ideal riding position, especially if they change bikes from one year to the next. During this delicate growth phase, it is important to be monitored by experts and not to overlook these details that can make a real difference not just over the coming season but for their future career that we hope will be as long and successful as possible,” so Andrea Morelli, Mapei Sport's Head of Biomechanics Analysis Lab, noted.
Optimising fitness training is aimed at athletes of all standards from all sports interested in improving their physical fitness; the re-athletisation service is designed for everybody who has completed their physiotherapy course and needs to complete their rehabilitation process before getting back into action. The re-athletisation phase is a particularly delicate period because the athlete has usually recovered from their injury but cannot perform at the performance level they are hoping for yet. During this period, it is essential to monitor the athlete’s training so that it meets their individual needs and the specific demands of their own sport. The common denominator in all the services provided by the Training Department is a distinctly customised, personalised approach to training, which is carried out on a "one-to-one" basis to guarantee the high standards that are synonymous with Mapei Sport Research Centre.
