A selection of key building projects completed in Malaysia using Mapei solutions. Ranging from symbolic national landmarks and healthcare facilities to sports courts and transport systems, the projects demonstrate the versatility and reliability of Mapei products across different applications and environmental conditions.

Dataran Ibu Pertiwi flagpole - Kuching, Sarawak

Rising skywards, alongside the Sarawak River flowing through Kuching, there is a highly symbolic structure for the Malaysian people: the tallest flagpole in the whole of Southeast Asia. And fluttering in the breeze at the top of the 99 m-tall pole (called “Ibu Pertiwi” or “motherland”) is the national flag. To create the stone and ceramic paths around the base of the flagpole, the landscape architects commissioned for the project chose a reliable system proposed by Mapei Malaysia. The system included waterproofing the substrates using Mapelastic membrane, reinforced with Mapenet 150 mesh, and installing the covering materials with the adhesives Keraflex Maxi S1 (now also available as Keraflex Maxi S1 Zero*) and Kerabond T (mixed with Isolastic 50 latex), followed by Ultracolor Plus to grout the joints in the vertical surfaces and Keracolor FF for those in the horizontal surfaces.

MYPickleball Courts @ Gravit8 - Klang South, Selangor

Pickleball is a sport that is enjoying increasing popularity in Malaysia. MYPickle @ Gravit8 is a centre that offers pickleball lovers, professional or not, seven pickleball courts located on the rooftops of a large building. The surfaces of the courts were made with Mapecoat TNS Professional, a multi-layered, acrylic resin-based system that created coloured playing surfaces that guarantee resistance to wear and adverse weather conditions. The system involved applying Mapecoat TNS White Base Coat as a filler undercoat on the concrete substrate, followed by a coat of Mapecoat TNS Base Color. The surfaces were finished with Mapecoat TNS Finish 4 coloured coating. The playing lines were marked with Mapecoat TNS Line.

Sunway Medical Centre - Subang Jaya, Selangor

Operational since 1999, Sunway Medical Centre is one of the largest private hospitals in Malaysia and the first in this country of the Sunway Healthcare Group. In 2023, it underwent an expansion to better cater to the needs of Malaysian and foreign patients. The works, which required an investment of more than 100 million euro and are still in progress, have led to the construction of two new towers and aim to reach a capacity of 885 beds, as well as creating new spaces for outpatient clinics and corridors.

Mapei Malaysia, which has been able to offer solutions for resilient floorings in the hospital sector since 2021, supplied Planiprep SC fine thixotropic skimming compound for localised repairs and Planiseal VS-MY waterproofing primer.

The surfaces were levelled with the self-levelling product Ultraplan Contract, which is ideal for surfaces where high resistance to loads and traffic, especially castor wheel transit, is required.

Bukit Malut Jetty Langkawi - Kedah

On the island of Langkawi, the largest of the eponymous archipelago in the Malaysian state of Kedah, there are several infrastructures related to shipping and maritime activities. One of these is the Bukit Malut jetty, which recently underwent repair and renovation work. Epojet LV epoxy resin was used to repair the cracks; Mapefer 1K mortar was applied to protect the steel reinforcement from corrosion; Mapegrout Thixotropic fibre-reinforced mortar was chosen to repair the damaged sections of the concrete structures; layers of coating were made with Mapefill 318, a ready-mixed powder mortar distributed on the local market by Mapei Malaysia, to protect and strengthen the piles immersed in water. The surfaces were then protected with Mapelastic Guard elastic cementitious membrane and Mapecoat SZ MY epoxy coating.

MRT Putrajaya Line - Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transport network - Kwasa Damansara, Selangor

This railway line is the second one of the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) network, a large-scale high-speed transport system. The line stretches for 57.7 km between the cities of Kwasa Damansara and Putrajaya and runs through Kuala Lumpur. Mapei solutions were used for the second phase of the works in 2018-2022: Idrocrete admixture was used to formulate water-repellent concrete to build 9 stations; Mapethene TVM membrane was applied to prevent the transfer of static electrical current through concrete slabs and walls; Purtop 1000 was used to waterproof the roof of the open-air tunnel; at selected stations ceramic floor and wall coverings were installed with Keraflex Maxi S1, Keraflex and Mapejoint Ti-Lock control joint. Tile joints were grouted with Keracolor FF. The expansion joints were sealed with Mapeflex PU 45.
