Technical assistance for liquid waterproofing and polyurethane foams, Mapei France

Following the detection of water seepage at the Mapei France plant in Saint-Vulbas, an urgent waterproofing intervention was required without removing the existing roof layers. The Tecnocoat polyurea system was selected for its excellent adhesion to damaged bituminous membranes and its ability to create a seamless, elastic and UV-resistant surface. Tthe system ensured high solar reflectance, long-term durability and uninterrupted industrial operations.

What were the technical reasons behind the choice of the Tecnopol solutions to waterproof the roofs at Mapei France plant?

The building was found to have several instances of water seepage during the audit of its roof waterproofing. Urgent action was needed to prevent significant water absorption into the insulation under the bitumen membrane. On the other hand, in many places, the first layer of the bitumen waterproofing system was severely damaged and weakened. Action had to be taken without uncovering the building, which would have risked damaging the production facilities and stock below.
A Tecnocoat system was chosen because it allows perfect adhesion to the bitumen system with only 2 kg/m2. It also ensured the creation of a continuous, elastic, anti-UV membrane in white with high solar reflectance and a long lifespan.
One of Mapei France’s production plants is located in Saint-Vulbas, near Lyon. Its 2,500 m² flat roof was re-waterproofed using Tecnopol solutions.

How did the industrial environments influence the waterproofing works?

The work did not disrupt Mapei's industrial facilities and activities. It was carried out from outside the building: the spraying equipment and raw materials remained on the ground, and the operator's spray gun on the roof was connected to the machine by a hose up to 95 m long.
After the application of Primer EPw-1070, the roof surface was sprayed with Tecnocoat P-2049, a two-component pure polyurea membrane, to ensure watertightness and high mechanical performance.

How do you manage the long-term maintenance of this polyurea-based waterproofing system in an industrial environment like Mapei France’s manufacturing plant?

We recommend inspecting the roof once or twice a year to check the drainage and remove dirt deposited by the wind and birds. There is no cleaning required. The Tecnotop 2C topcoat is very smooth, does not retain dust, and there is no growth of moss or lichen.
To give the roof long-lasting protection against UV rays, Tecnotop 2C resin was applied as a finish.

Is it possible to use the same waterproofing system in different environments or are other Tecnopol system more suitable to this purpose?

The Tecnocoat P-2049 system is suitable for renovating many types of roofs and terraces, whether they are made of bitumen, concrete, sheet metal, old PVC membranes, etc. It is also recommended for new constructions, for all industrial roofs, and for waterproofing needs that involve many specific points. The system allows for inverted insulation, i.e. the insulation is located above the waterproofing system, sprayed directly onto the substrate, which remains protected by the XPS insulation, itself protected and weighted down by gravel, vegetation or paving. It is a high-performance and highly durable waterproofing system.
