Descripción The Salt River Railway Bridge in Cape Town is an important rail commodity transport route from the West Coast of South Africa into the City of Cape Town’s harbour. The concrete of the bridge had deteriorated severely due to tidal effects and wave action of the sea. Mapei South Africa was involved initially with the specification of the repair and protection design, and then invited to tender for the supply of products

Mapei South Africa further collaborated with the contractor, EMPA Structures, to develop a cost effective repair solution that not only met the financial constraints of the project, but also accommodated the strict timelines imposed by the project. Preparation to concrete and placement of Self Compacting grouts could only be effected during the low tide periods, and this required innovative product use and unusual placement techniques by the contractor.

The various Mapei products were tested according to the structural, environmental and technical requirements of the project and were used to formulate the solution for the completion of the project. This was continuously monitored by the University of Cape Town and regular site servicing by Mapei South Africa technical staff ensured that all customer service and technical support requirements could be met. The products supplied were:
•Mapefer 1K was applied to the repaired and cleaned reinforcement steel.
•Mapegrout T60ME was used after extensive testing in the Mapei South Africa concrete laboratory in Johannesburg as the repair mortar. It was stringently tested to ensure adequate strength gain to avoid being washed off in times of high tide.
•Stabilcem SCC was also tested in the Johannesburg laboratory for early strength to prevent erosion after placement. This was used to produce the self compating bulk concrete mix for the supporting walls
•Planigrout 300 was used on the plinths after the bridge deck was raised and the underlying area rehabilitated.
•Eporip was used in the soffit of the bridge deck to improve the bond between the old and the new concrete which was tested by the University of Cape Town.
•Mapelastic Smart was used for additional waterproofing and concrete protection
