Our history

Our history has a tight bond with Italy, the nation that witnessed our birth and growth. Our roots are firmly embedded in a solid past and in values that have the merit of still being relevant today: passion and innovation. And this is why we have never stopped growing. Ours is the story of a company, but it is also the story of a family: a stage race with exhausting climbs and exciting sprint finishes, but above all so many exhilarating successes and exceptional team members.

Protests around the world question everything. Politics, work, relations between men and women will never be the same again. The Earth is no longer big enough for us: Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin are the first men to set foot on the moon. The film industry also takes off with Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” and the Star Wars epic. Meanwhile, the latest developments in industrial technology are the legendary Brionvega TV set, the juke box, colour TV and the 45 rpm vinyl disc. Civil society decides to lower the age of adulthood from 21 to 18 years. Optic fibres are also discovered in the field of science. The world music stage is graced by the likes of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Abba, The Bee Gees and then Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Mina, Gino Paoli and other Italian singers. The famous Woodstock Festival makes music history. The Italian quiz master Mike Buongiorno livens up people’s evenings in Italy with his legendary “Rischiatutto”.

Everything is called into question, except Mapei

Mapei is also projected into the future. KERABOND is Mapei’s first cementitious adhesive without polymers, guaranteeing highquality properties at an affordable price. Plus KERALASTIC, thanks to which ceramic tiles can now be applied to new types of substrates: ranging from cementitious renders to metal screeds, wood and fibreglass. SIGILLANTE PE12, an epoxy-based adhesive now known as KERAPOXY, can meet the demand for acidresistant grouting (laboratory benches and the chemical and pharmaceutical industries).

SIGILLANTE 3433, silicone sealant - now called MAPESIL AC - was created for the elastic sealing of joints on ceramic surfaces. Memorable is the Fiat 500 on show at SAIE 1971, anchored to the ceiling with ADESILEX P9 hanging calmly upside-down like a lizard. Mapei introduces the first flexible latex additive for cementitious adhesives: ISOLASTIC. The KERABOND + ISOLASTIC system allows large and relatively unabsorbent tiles to also be installed on high outdoor façades and wooden supports.
