A new lease of life for a Sardinian velodrome
A cutting-edge intervention returns a cycling facility of excellence to the people of Sardinia
After years of abandonment, the Quartu Sant’Elena Velodrome in Sardinia has been transformed into a modern cycling facility thanks to a comprehensive redevelopment project. The renovation relied heavily on Mapei’s advanced materials, such as the Mapecoat TNS Cycle Track system. This system is designed to ensure maximum performance, safety and durability.
After years of neglect, significant redevelopment work has given a new lease of life to the Quartu Sant’Elena Velodrome in Sardinia. The project included the use of innovative materials and cutting-edge solutions to guarantee the best possible performance for cyclists. The entire structure underwent redevelopment work, with particular attention paid to refurbishing the track. Mapei played a central role by supplying specific products for coating the track, helping to create a modern, safe and long-lasting facility.

The use of Mapecoat TNS Cycle Track for coating the tracks ensured high wear resistance and an excellent combination of sliding properties and stability for the athletes.
Mapei technology and solutions for a high-performance track
Because of the velodrome’s vicinity to the sea, exposure to intense, direct sunlight and the steep cambers around the bends, cutting-edge solutions were required to guarantee the surfaces of the track would be resistant, uniform and durable. Before carrying out renovation work on the cycle track, some concrete surfaces and elements were treated and repaired with Mapei solutions. Eporip epoxy adhesive was used to seal cracks due to hygrometric shrinkage. Mapegrout LM 2K thixotropic, fibre-reinforced, cementitious mortar was used to rebuild portions of damaged concrete. Mapeflex PU 45 FT rapid, high modulus polyurethane sealant, together with Mapefoam closed cell polyethylene foam cord, was used to create elastic seals for the joints.

The Mapecoat TNS Cycle Track system, specific for cycling facilities, was applied to ensure the best performance from the track.
Mapecoat TNS Cycle Track system: excellent performances and durability
The Mapecoat TNS Cycle Track system, specific for cycling facilities, was applied to ensure the best performance from the track. This treatment cycle included the use of Mapecoat TNS Primer EPW epoxy primer to prepare the surface, followed by the application of Mapecoat TNS White Base Coat HV, an acrylic resin-based product to correct any irregularities in the surface. The next step was to spread on a coat of Mapecoat TNS Base Color water-based acrylic resin with small to medium aggregates, ideal for evening out surfaces. And lastly, Mapecoat TNS Paint was applied as a final wear-resistant layer, giving the track a high level of resistance and perfect for racing.
Thanks to the professionally executed redevelopment work and the use of cutting-edge Mapei solutions, Quartu Sant’Elena Velodrome is set to become a point of reference for both Sardinian and Italian cycling. Apart from returning a modern, functional facility to the city, the work represents an important step in enhancing the value of sport and local infrastructures, contributing to the growth and development of the territory.

Mapecoat TNS Paint was applied as a final wear-resistant layer, giving the track a high level of resistance.
