The new Sibaritide General Hospital in Corigliano-Rossano, Calabria, stands as one of Southern Italy’s most advanced healthcare facilities, combining precast technology, sustainability, and architectural quality. Mapei and Polyglass played key roles in supplying certified waterproofing systems and high-performance materials for both roofs and interior spaces. Their integrated solutions ensure durability, energy efficiency, and safety while meeting stringent healthcare standards. Supported by rigorous technical supervision and Bureau Veritas certification, the project exemplifies innovation and excellence in modern hospital design.

Of all the hospitals in Southern Italy, the new Sibaritide is one of the most significant and innovative works completed in recent years. Located in the heart of Calabria Region, this hospital complex represents an effective combination of state-of-the-art engineering, advanced precast production processes and sustainable design, which provides an outstandingly efficient response to contemporary healthcare needs.
Both Mapei and Polyglass are participating in the project, which is still ongoing, with complete, innovative and durable solutions.
Mapei is contributing by supplying products for the interior spaces of the building, including solutions for soundproofing the rooms on the first and second floors, covering an area of approximately 40,000 m2, the installation of ceramic tiles in the hospital rooms, corridors, waiting rooms, lobby and service areas, and other solutions, ensuring high performance in terms of comfort, hygiene and durability.
One of the most delicate and strategic aspects of the construction process was the waterproofing of the roofs and several critical indoor areas, where top performance and technical reliability were imperatives. The collaboration with Polyglass and Mapei therefore played a crucial role, by providing comprehensive, certified solutions designed to ensure durability, safety and energy-efficiency.
The new Sibaritide General Hospital complex represents an effective combination of state-of-the-art engineering, advanced precast production processes and sustainable design.

An integrated design based on precast production and quality

The design of the hospital made extensive use of precast production processes, not only for the load-bearing structures, but also for the technical systems and architectural finishings. This choice helped optimise the construction time and cost, while also enhancing the build-quality. The synergy between the various parties involved – from the general contractor D’Agostino Costruzioni Generali S.p.A., under the technical leadership of Domenico Petrone, to the building contractor Industrial Service Srl – resulted in the construction of a modern, functional facility, built to last.

Innovation and performance

The waterproofing of the roofs was carried out using a complex, high-performance, certified layering system, designed to ensure weather-resistance and allow correct maintenance of the roof-mounted technical installations. The system adopted for the construction of the roof of the Sibaritide Hospital has been designed to ensure maximum performance in terms of durability, energy efficiency and ease of maintenance, precisely meeting the stringent requirements of a new generation healthcare facility.
The system consists of a reinforced concrete floor slab, completed with a cementitious screed shaped with the appropriate slopes, mixed with Mapescreed Fast Track Tracer, an admixture that allows accelerated curing of the screed, significantly reducing waiting times and allowing subsequent work to proceed more quickly.
Next, Idroprimer was applied as an adhesion promoter, ensuring excellent compatibility between the different layers and greater durability of the system over time.

For vapour control, the Polyvap Radonshield P-AL membrane was chosen, as it provides an effective and stable barrier over the long term. Thermal insulation was provided by 100 mm XTherm extruded polystyrene panels, characterised by high mechanical resistance and excellent performance in terms of thermal conductivity, all to the benefit of the building's energy efficiency.

The heart of the waterproofing system is the Mapeplan T B synthetic FPO/TPO membrane, a latest-generation membrane that combines UV resistance and dimensional stability, making it ideal for exposed roofing such as that of a hospital.

The system adopted for the construction of the roof has been designed to ensure maximum performance in terms of durability, energy efficiency and ease of maintenance.
To protect this membrane from possible mechanical stress, a layer of Polydren PP protective geotextile has been inserted. The use of Mapeplan PE separation and desolidarisation layer, made of low density LDPE polyethylene, contributes to the protection of the sys-tem, allowing high breathability for the materials preventing high levels of dampness. A cementitious ballast layer was created on top, also with the addition of Mapescreed Fast Track Tracer, to ensure rapid drying and stable installation, which is also functional during routine and extraordinary maintenance. Polylastic liquid protective membrane, which provides additional protection against atmospheric agents and UV rays, was also applied to preserve the integrity of the entire system over time.
Each layer of the roofing systems has been carefully selected to meet specific requirements in terms of mechanical strength, dimensional stability and environmental compatibility, with a focus on the future maintenance of technical surfaces on the roof, a fundamental element in a highly operational healthcare setting.
The roofing system was completed with the liquid membrane Polylastic, which provides additional protection, helping to preserve the integrity of the waterproofing system over time.

Technical support and certified guarantees

Designed to safely support foot traffic, the roofs house numerous technological systems, to which access will be required for the purposes of inspection and maintenance. Their waterproofing was therefore designed to withstand the stresses generated by maintenance operations, while also providing maximum protection against water ingress.
Targeted works were also carried out inside the hospital: for example, the surfaces above operating theatres were protected with waterproofing solutions to prevent damage in the event of accidental leaks from machinery, thus ensuring the functional integrity of the rooms below.
One of the major benefits made available for this project was the technical support provided by both Mapei’s and Polyglass’ Technical Services, which oversaw all the operational phases by means of testing, inspections and specialist consulting. The chosen solution complies with current Italian and European standards and is certified by Bureau Veritas Italia, as an additional guarantee of the quality of the work.
The new Sibaritide General Hospital is a tangible example of advanced healthcare architecture, where every detail, from the waterproofing to the design of the technical installations, has been carefully considered, to build a safer, more modern future for public health.
