Mapei restores historic horseshoe tunnel at Knightsbridge Underground Station

November 17, 2025

A Mapei concrete repair system has been used to carry out renovation works at the historic Knightsbridge Underground Station Horseshoe. The project, carried out by Delatim, included the existing sub-surface tunnels which have been modified to provide step-free access. Mapei products were supplied by Apex Grange and Resapol Park Royal. The project forms part of extensive improvement works at the station, including three new lifts for step-free access.

Opened in 1906, Knightsbridge Underground Station is located within London’s busy, fashionable shopping district and sees more than 13 million journeys each year. The Horseshoe pedestrian tunnel scheme was designed by DB3 Architects; works included removal of original tiles from the passageway prior to repairs and reinstatement, along with repairs to feature moulding.

Following removal of the historic tiles, Delatim rendered back to the tunnel’s original substrate and used a series of Mapei products to carry out the repairs.
They included Mapefer 1K Zero – an anti-corrosion coating used alongside steel reinforcement rods; Eporip solvent-free epoxy adhesive to repair cracks; Mapemortar HB R3 repair mortar and Planitop Smooth & Repair R4 Zero – a fibre-reinforced, rapid-set, thixotropic cementitious mortar from the Zero Line, with CO₂ offset in the entire lifecycle*.

Mapenet EM40 mesh – a re-impregnated alkali-resistant A.R. glass fibre mesh (FRP) – was used to reinforce the structural render. The repaired surface was then smoothed and levelled with Planitop Fast 330 – a quick-setting, fibre-reinforced cementitious levelling mortar.
