Site Sealants goes below ground with Mapei

Leading structural waterproofing contractor, Site Sealants has recently completed a below ground membrane project using a Mapeproof system.  The residential project was carried out for Buckley Homes at its Pitt Street development, in Leith, Edinburgh. The waterproofing specification also included Mapei’s Idrocrete KR 1000 watertight admixture, which was incorporated into the Watertight 20PC concrete mix supplied by Aggregate Industries from its Leith plant.

Buckley Homes Pitt Street complex includes eight one-bedroom luxury apartments, each with south facing balconies overlooking the Water of Leith path.  During the foundation works, Site Sealants installed Mapeproof AL AP and Mapeproof AL 1200 AP waterproof membranes to protect the underground structure of the building.   Mapeproof AL AP is a fully bonded HDPE (High Density Polyethylene Geomembrane) membrane that’s installed prior to the pouring of concrete and Mapeproof AL 1200 AP - a self-adhesive system – is applied after concrete has been poured.  The robust membranes are highly resistant to puncturing, tearing, natural elements and UV rays and provide a barrier against groundwater, soil moisture, radon and methane gas.  On contact with concrete, the systems form a permanent, tough bond.

The below ground specification stipulated two forms of protection for this structure, with watertight concrete also being specified to satisfy Type A/B design requirements.  The specification included Mapei’s watertight concrete admixture Idrocrete KR 1000 - a bagged system featuring crystalline technology that works together with the specified mix design to reduce the permeability of the hardened concrete.  As part of the system, all construction joints were also fully protected using Mapei’s Idrostop hydrophilic waterbar and mastic.  Mapei’s site support team was delighted to support both Site Sealants and Aggregate Industries with the joint preparation and concrete supply.
