On the roofs of the world
From historic buildings to hotels, sports facilities and commercial spaces: a journey through roofs in different areas of the globe
From commercial buildings and parking structures to historic palaces, sports facilities and hotels, roofing systems play a key role in performance and durability worldwide. This selection of projects showcases advanced waterproofing and surface solutions applied in diverse climatic, regulatory and functional contexts. Each intervention responds touals to specific technical requirements, from fire resistance and photovoltaic integration to structural reinforcement and aesthetic performance. Together, they highlight the versatility and reliability of modern roofing technologies on a global scale.
Sportler store - Silea (Italy)
The roof of the commercial building that houses the Sportler store in Silea was recently waterproofed using Polyglass solutions. Plana P 4 mm vapour control layer was flame-applied to the reinforced concrete roof supports, while Spider P SA vapour control layer was applied without use of flame to the sections with wooden supports. The waterproofing layer was created using Mapeplan T M 18 Broof (t2) membrane, mechanically fixed and applied over the Velo Vetro DH 120 TL separation layer, after installing the insulating layer consisting of Polysol PIR foam panels. The resulting stratigraphy is classified as Broof (t2) for external fire resistance, which is necessary for the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof, in accordance with the regulations and guidelines of the Italian Fire Brigade in force during the period of execution of the work. The intervention considered the presence of photovoltaic panels, ensuring compatibility of the system with the plant requirements and standards required for commercial buildings.

Ocean County parking garage - Roms River (Usa)
In 2024, a major renovation project was completed on the Ocean County parking garage in Toms River, New Jersey. Mapei collaborated with T&M Associates, providing its concrete repair solutions. After adequate preparation of the substrate, two coats of the Planiseal Traffic Coat** epoxy coating were applied by the contractors, Infrastructure Repair Service (IRS) and Mosites, to the upper level of the car park, which acts as a roof, followed by the Mapefloor Finish 450** polyurethane finish to improve resistance and durability. Elastocolor Coat** was used on the parapets, improving their appearance and protecting them from the aggressive weather elements. Finally, the floors in the car park at lower levels were treated with Planiseal WR** water-repellent coating, ensuring long-lasting protection against water penetration. The work has improved the safety, functionality, and durability of the entire structure.

Palazzo Bartolomeo - Formia (Italy)
Built between 1902 and 1911 in the Liberty style (the Italian variant of Art Nouveau), Palazzo Bartolomeo is an important example of historical architecture in Formia (Southern Italy). Having survived a series of air raids during the Second World War, it recently underwent a programme of conservative restoration work aimed at static consolidation and seismic upgrading of the roof. The upper side of the slab was reinforced by completely removing the existing floor covering and preparing the substrate. Connecting bars in traditional B450C steel were then inserted and anchored with Mapefix VE SF vinyl ester anchors to strengthen the structure. The surface of the existing slab was consolidated with Primer 3296 and the structural casting was carried out using Planitop HPC Floor mortar with the addition of Mapecure SRA admixture. The slab was then waterproofed with Mapelastic Smart reinforced with Mapenet 150 mesh and Mapeband tape for the joints. Lastly, the new ceramic floor covering was laid using Keraflex Extra S1 (now available as Keraflex Extra S1 Zero*), the joints were grouted with Ultracolor Plus* and the perimeter joints were sealed with Mapesil AC, to ensure durability and easy maintenance.

Bao'an sports center tennis hall - Shenzhen (China)
The Shenzhen Bao'an sports center tennis hall, opening in 2025, will be a center of excellence with 21 state-of-the-art courts, including 17 outdoor and 3 VIP indoor, completed with Mapecoat TNS Comfort system. To ensure a high-performance surface that meets international standards, application began with treating the substrates with Mapecoat I 600 W epoxy primers, while Mapecoat TNS Grey Base Coat and Mapecoat TNS White Base Coat were used for creating the base. Finally, finishing with Mapecoat TNS Finish 4 and Mapecoat TNS Color ensured high aesthetic impact and durability to the surfaces. Mapecoat TNS Line was used to mark the lines.

Moxy Putrajaya hotel - Putrajaya (Malaysia)
The Moxy Putrajaya Hotel, belonging to the Marriott International chain, is known for its modern and lively style. The structure is part of a large urban development project under the IOI Group, which includes offices, residences, recreational facilities and one of the largest shopping centres in Malaysia, creating a dynamic hub for residents and visitors. In 2024, Mapei and Polyglass contributed to the construction of the building by providing solutions for waterproofing the roof, swimming pool and bathrooms, as well as for installing resilient flooring in the rooms and gym. Mapefoil DPM 150 was applied as a separation layer on a 1,800 m2 concrete area.
Mapeplan TM 15** synthetic TPO membrane, supplied by Polyglass (Mapei Group) was mechanically fixed thereupon to ensure long-lasting protection. Thanks to these innovative solutions, the hotel guarantees comfort, safety and durability, meeting the needs of a constantly evolving environment.
