Mapei Giving Back: Mandela Day 2025 at El-Shammah Home

Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual international day declared by the United Nations in November 2009 and is a global call to action- a reminder that each of us has the power to change the world for the better. The day is observed on July 18th and asks individuals to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to making a positive impact in their communities. Why 67 minutes? Each of the 67 minutes represents one of the 67 years spent by Nelson Mandela in service to the public, social justice and human rights.  This year, the Mapei team spent the day giving back at El-Shammah Home in Primrose, Germiston, a haven for abandoned and unwanted babies aged 0 to 18 months. El-Shammah is a Department of Social Development Gauteng-accredited child and youth care centre that provides round-the-clock care, love, and stability to infants in need. At full capacity, the Home supports up to 12 babies, many brought in by South African Police Services and social workers from surrounding communities. With the support of our partners, we were able to make a meaningful contribution: Prominent Paints donated paint to help us refresh the walls. Trompie Group supplied turf to uplift the outdoor play area. We also donated baby milk and diapers — essentials that go a long way in supporting the caregivers. Our team refurbished the sandpit and spent the day painting, playing with the babies, and bringing moments of joy and care. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and energy. Your efforts made a lasting difference in the lives of the children and the carers who serve them daily.

"It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it." – Nelson Mandela.
