EPD

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a report issued according to international standards (ISO 14025, EN 15804) that quantifies the environmental impacts of a product over its whole life cycle, measured with the standardized LCA (Life Cycle Assessment).

Ozone Depletion Potential refers to the degradation of the stratospheric layer of the ozone involved in blocking the UV component of sunrays. Depletion is due to particularly reactive components that originate from chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) or chlorofluoromethane (CFM).

In the construction field, EPDs are an important tool for architects, designers and other stakeholders in order to a have a better understanding of the environmental impacts of a product. Building ratings (LEED, BREEAM, CAM for example) have implemented sustainability criteria and established specific requirements for buildings based on the LCA methodology.

Esistono EPD standard, EPD medie e EPD model.

EPD Standard

EPD singole, relative ad uno specifico prodotto, preparate da un singolo produttore. Riportano informazioni specifiche per il prodotto in oggetto e richiedono elevati costi per la loro preparazione ed il loro mantenimento. Le EPD vengono riviste periodicamente ed eventualmente ripubblicate nel caso di modifiche significative degli impatti ambientali.

EPD Medie

EPD preparate e calcolate per una particolare gamma di prodotti con funzioni simili. Possono comprendere prodotti di diversi produttori e sono solitamente pubblicate da associazioni di categoria. Riportano gli impatti ambientali medi dei prodotti e produttori che hanno partecipato alla raccolta ed elaborazione dei dati.

EPD Model

Strutturate in base alla composizione chimica, coprono tutti i prodotti che rientrano in un certo intervallo di composizioni chimiche e applicazioni. Dato che l'impatto ambientale in un edificio di uno dei suddetti prodotti è sostanzialmente molto basso, una differenziazione più raffinata non fornirebbe informazioni più significative ad architetti e progettisti, a causa della grande complessità del sistema edificio.

Le Model EPD sono state sviluppate da FEICA (Association of the European Adhesive and Sealant Industry) e EFCA (European Federation of Concrete Admixtures) seguendo un approccio di "scenario peggiore" ("worst case scenario").

Le EPD di FEICA e EFCA sono certificate e pubblicate dal Program Operator tedesco IBU.
