MAPEI Inc. celebrates its 45th anniversary in Canada

March 2, 2023

Laval, Quebec -- 2023 marks 45 years since MAPEI Inc. was established in Canada, and what better way to celebrate than by inaugurating a new plant and Research & Development Centre?

Commonly referred to as MAPEI Canada, MAPEI Inc. has certainly come a long way since the parent company made its Canadian debut as an adhesive supplier for the Olympic Stadium's running track for the 1976 Montreal Olympics. That project marked the first step on the road to internationalization for the Milan, Italy-based company, MAPEI Group, that today includes 100 subsidiaries operating in 57 countries and 86 manufacturing plants in 35 nations worldwide.

Following the establishment of the Laval plant and head office in 1978, expansion came quickly – across Canada and around the world. Today, MAPEI is a world-leading manufacturer of mortars, grouts, adhesives and complementary products for installing all types of flooring and wall coverings. The company specializes in developing chemical products for every aspect of construction, from waterproofing and structural strengthening to concrete repairs and tunnel building.

MAPEI Canada's footprint currently spans over 4,600 km, with production facilities in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia and a distribution center in Alberta. Already the largest facility in Canada, the Laval site is expanding in 2023, adding a new 50,750-square-foot (4 715-m²) powders production plant, and a second R&D laboratory dedicated to concrete construction for Nordic climates worldwide.

The new Laval plant's concrete foundation even harnesses the advanced technology from MAPEI’s Admixtures for Concrete line: the Mapecrete System. Among other benefits, the increased production capacity in Laval will have a ripple effect, allowing for a more balanced production across Canada. By enhancing our ability to shift production accordingly for more localization between our plants, MAPEI Canada can help reduce the company’s overall carbon footprint with quicker deliveries and shorter distances for transport of supplies to construction sites.

Maximizing the use of locally sourced materials is part of the MAPEI pillar for improving sustainability in construction. It is part of the philosophy that has allowed the company to help build and renovate some of Canada's most notable buildings and infrastructure, stretching from Sewell's Landing in West Vancouver, BC, to the Shaw Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, to the Avenir Centre in Moncton, New Brunswick, among many others. With 11 product lines covering all aspects of construction, MAPEI Inc. is poised to achieve even greater heights in helping build Canada for many years to come.
