It is official: the new road leading to Mapei Football Center has been named after Giorgio Squinzi as a fitting tribute to the club’s former owner. The synthetic grass pitch inside Mapei Football Center has been dedicated to Sassuolo’s former Vice President, Adriana Spazzoli.
The official opening ceremony for both the road and playing field took place on the morning of 15th November, just after the Italian national football team completed its final training session at “Mapei Football Center” ready for the match that evening against Poland.
The opening ceremony was attended by Marco Squinzi, Giorgio and Adriana’s son and Mapei’s CEO, Gian Francesco Menani, the mayor of Sassuolo, Gabriele Gravina, chairman of the Italian Football Federation and some players from the Italian national football team.
Here is the message sent by Veronica Squinzi, Mapei’s CEO and Vice-President of Sassuolo: “We would like to thank Sassuolo City Council. Being able to name the road leading up to Mapei Football Center after my father is extremely important for us. My father always believed in the team and, in some sense, he paved the way for its successes. He was determined to create the Mapei Football Center, another steppingstone in Mapei’s overall strategy in the world of sport, which adopts the same business philosophy as the company. The Football Center is an investment on the way towards even more important goals and, due to its openness, it is also a place to meet with the fans and the rest of the local community”.
Talking about the playing field named after Adriana Spazzoli, Marco Squinzi had the following to say: “My mother was extremely charismatic and knew how to get on with the players, encouraging and supporting them. Naming the playing field after her is a tribute to the great contribution she made to the team and the entire club.
This is a cutting-edge facility from both a sporting and architectural viewpoint, and the very latest low-impact building technology was used to construct its synthetic grass playing field. This technology has improved the ground’s mechanical properties, thanks to the very latest MAPESOIL drainage system”.
