When more than 200 architects, designers, contractors and sustainability professionals gathered in Washington, D.C., on July 16-17 for the 2nd annual Flooring Sustainability Summit, the mood was clear: The industry is ready to do more than talk about sustainability – it’s ready to act. And at the heart of that commitment stood MAPEI, once again serving as the summit’s headline sponsor.

For MAPEI, supporting the summit is more than a sponsorship – it’s an opportunity to lead by example and push the industry forward. Representing MAPEI at the event were Logan Reavis, Director of Technical Services; Jim Whitfield, Technical Services Advisor; and Curtis Yocum, Architectural Representative. Together, they joined panel discussions, networked with thought leaders and shared MAPEI’s evolving vision for a more sustainable built environment.

Sustainability: A shared responsibility

Over two days of presentations and collaborative workshops, attendees explored the latest trends shaping sustainable flooring – from carbon-reduction strategies and circular economy approaches to healthier indoor environments and responsible material sourcing. The summit also highlighted how collaboration between manufacturers, architects, specifiers and installers can drive meaningful change at every stage of a project.

“For MAPEI, sustainability isn’t an add-on – it’s part of how we design, test, manufacture and support our products,” Reavis said. “We’re looking at the entire life cycle of our solutions, from raw materials to performance in the field to end-of-life recycling or reuse opportunities. Events like this summit help ensure we’re not just keeping pace but setting the pace.”

Elevating industry standards

As the industry’s expectations evolve, MAPEI’s approach remains proactive and multi-faceted. From low-VOC formulations and reduced-carbon cementitious products to transparency through Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), material ingredient reports and other third-party certifications, MAPEI’s comprehensive sustainability program has become a benchmark for others to follow.

At the summit, Jim Whitfield and Curtis Yocum shared examples of how MAPEI’s advanced technologies support designers and contractors who are committed to meeting stringent green building standards such as LEED, the WELL Building Standard and beyond. “One of our main goals is to make sustainability easier to achieve – without sacrificing performance or ease of installation,” Whitfield said.

A commitment that extends beyond products

But for MAPEI, sustainability is also about people and communities. By investing in research, education and industry partnerships like the Flooring Sustainability Summit, MAPEI works to ensure that knowledge is shared and progress is accelerated.

“It’s encouraging to see so many people from different parts of the industry come together with a shared purpose,” Yocum said. “Sustainability can’t be solved in a silo. Events like this one remind us that the flooring industry has the creativity, technical skill and collaborative spirit to make real change.”

Looking ahead

As the 2025 summit ended, the consensus was clear: There is still work to be done – and MAPEI is ready to keep doing it. By returning as the headline sponsor for a second year, MAPEI has made it clear that driving sustainability forward is not a one-time commitment, but a cornerstone of how the company operates and innovates every day.

Whether developing next-generation adhesives and grouts, expanding recycling initiatives, or partnering with industry associations to establish new benchmarks for sustainability, MAPEI’s mission is clear: To empower the flooring industry to build greener, healthier spaces for generations to come.
