If you are working on a home-improvement project involving tile, resilient flooring, carpet or wood, your trowel might be the most important tool that you pick up. The truth is it is not just about the size of the trowel – how you use the trowel plays an equally critical role in the success of your installation.
Below, we break down how to use a trowel properly, along with tips that apply to a variety of flooring types. No matter what type of flooring you are installing, the following steps will help ensure a proper application and long-lasting results.
Step 1: Spread and key in
Begin by using the flat side of your trowel to apply a thin, even coat of mortar or adhesive to the substrate. This initial layer helps bond the material securely to the surface.
Step 2: Comb with the notched side
After keying in, switch to the notched side of the trowel. Hold the trowel at a 45-degree angle and comb the material in straight, parallel lines. Avoid swirling. Consecutive lines allow air to escape and ensure consistent coverage when the tile or flooring is pressed into place.
Step 3: Set your materials
Place your tile or flooring into the mortar or adhesive with a slight twist or a back-and-forth motion. This action collapses the ridges and eliminates air pockets, resulting in complete and even coverage underneath the material.
Step 4: Lift and check
Periodically lift a tile or plank to check for coverage. The goal is 80% mortar or adhesive transfer for dry interior areas, and up to 95% for wet areas or natural stone installations. If coverage is insufficient, adjust your trowel size or technique accordingly.
Step 5: Clean as you go
Keep your trowel clean throughout the installation process. Wipe it down regularly to prevent dried mortar or adhesive from affecting your application. A clean trowel ensures consistency and precision in your work.
Using a trowel correctly is a foundational skill in any successful flooring project. By following these steps and selecting the appropriate trowel size for your material, you can help ensure a professional-quality installation that lasts.
