Milan, 25^th June 2021 - Onsitestudio architecture firm received a commendation from the 2021 Italian Architecture Prize organised by the Triennale Milano and MAXXI Foundation - National Museum of XXI Century Arts in Rome, for its project for Mapei Football Center.

The panel of judges noted that “the new Mapei Football Center, a sleek-looking building carefully constructed alongside the playing fields, showcases the cultural importance of building in an anthropic setting. The new construction nestles into a traditional farm landscape that has been reinterpreted along modern lines to help the local community celebrate and represent itself”.

The cutting-edge sports centre belonging to Sassuolo Football Club located in Ca’ Marta in Sassuolo (Modena), which was such an important project to Giorgio Squinzi, fits neatly into the flat and open farmlands of Emilia to strengthen Mapei’s ties with the local territory.

“We are delighted that the Mapei Football Center, built using our materials, has been awarded this important commendation. Its success is partly due to Giorgio Squinzi’s vision, a man who instantly understood and embraced the unconventional nature of the project in terms of its morphology, structures and aesthetics”, so Simona Giorgetta noted, Mapei’s Real Estate Coordinator.

The project, which evokes the old-fashioned colonnades typical of architecture of the past but given a modern twist, covers an area of 45,000 m² and includes six playing fields, a covered stand with a refreshment facility and a 6000 m² building constructed over four levels surrounded by (and scaled to) the football pitches. Thanks to the use of Mapei cutting-edge technological and sustainable products and solutions, the sports centre received the LEED V4 BD+C certification by GBC Italy.

Mapei Football Center comes together and interacts with its surroundings, the local community and football fans, partly thanks to a range of projects (including social-charity events) and integration projects organised by Sassuolo Football Club, such as the recent training camp for the Italian Football Team for Amputees.

The Prize, held on alternate years in Rome and Milan, is aimed at showcasing Italian architecture by promoting works designed by Italian architects or architects working in Italy, who are committed to innovation, high-quality and the social purpose of architecture.
