Mapei, leader in the production of chemical products for the construction industry and actively involved in the most important projects around the world, has entered the wind power plant market, a crucial part of the energy sector for the production of alternative renewable energy, with the introduction of systems developed specifically for this sector, which includes ultra high performance mortars such as Mapefill 130 WT for anchoring onshore wind turbines.

Mapefill 130 WT is a high performance, plastic mortar with the capacity to flow into tight, geometrically complex spaces and to absorb dynamic loads by transferring them to foundations. It stands out in particular for its high compressive strength, high resistance to fatigue, volumetric stability and low porosity and water absorption.

Mapefill 130 WT complies with the principles defined in EN 1504-9[1] and with the minimum requirements of EN 1504-6 for anchoring applications.

Wind farms completed

Mapei has taken part in the construction of numerous wind power plants in Finland. The projects are located in various municipalities and involved the installation of almost 100 turbines requiring the supply of more than 400 tonnes of mortar. Some of the projects Mapei has been involved in have already been completed while others are nearing completion, and include:

• Alajoki-Peuralinna: 14 wind turbines, with 7 in the municipality of Perho and 7 in the municipality of Kyyjarvi.
• Puskakorpi: an 88 MW wind power plant with 16 turbines. Situated in the Ostrobothnia region in the municipality of Pyhajoki, the plant generates sufficient renewable energy to cater for the needs of 55,000 families.
• Puutikankangas: situated in the municipality of Sievi, this plant has 8 wind turbines with a total capacity of 44 MW. Its annual production of 150 GWh is equivalent to the annual electrical consumption of 30,000 families.
• Pjelax-Böle and Kristinestad Norr Wind Farm: situated in the municipalities of Närpes and Kristinestad, the project consists of the construction of 56 wind turbines with an annual energy production of around 1.1 TWh. These wind farms are scheduled to be fully operational in the second quarter of 2024.

Complete systems

Numerous other Mapei systems can be used on wind farms: from cementitious and polyurethane elastic membranes for waterproofing foundations to epoxy adhesives for structural anchor points for prefabricated elements, from low viscosity epoxy resins for sealing cracks in concrete bases to mortars for localised and more widespread repairs in concrete elements, to sealants for making elastic seals and cathodic protection for steel reinforcement in foundation structures, and so much more.
